The PENDEX™ report indexes the membership of the church by the neotribal segment among which the church members lives. Then the segment profile of the church is compared to the segment profile of the community. This comparison yields a penetration index — a measurement of the percentage of each community segment that is a member of the church. This represents the extent to which the church has penetrated the lostness of each segment. The PENDEX™ clarifies the most winnable segments, those segments with the most growth potential, those segments with the most developmental potential, and those segments with the greatest mission opportunity for the congregation.
Primary Missional Role Using this Report
The PENDEX is an assessment tool that can be used to better understand the congregation, the community, and how the church may or may not relate to the people groups in its community. Those with a prophetic role may use the PENDEX report as a diagnostic tool to better evaluate the missional potential of the congregation. Based on this assessment, several conclusions may be drawn that are beneficial to the development and implementation of missional strategies.
Research Question
Report Description
The PENDEX report provides a window into the spiritual condition of the community by evaluating the extent of evangelical presence within the social environments, lifestyle groups, lifestage groups, and social enclaves present in the missional study area. Because the report measures the extent to which the church has penetrated the lostness of each segment, the PENDEX is an evaluative tool for the congregation to better understand which groups they are effectively reaching and those which they are not.
Report Objective
To assist congregations in evaluating the cultural groups represented in their church compared to the community in order to determine missional potential, opportunity & calling.

Report Worksheets
The worksheets provide a process to discover specific ways in which the participants can lead their churches to penetrate lostness within the social networks of their community target groups. The PENDEX™ clarifies the most winnable segments, those segments with the most growth potential, those segments with the most developmental potential, and those segments with the greatest mission opportunity for the congregation.
Report Training
Training in Missional Congregational Commission is included in the iFOCUS Basic Training process. Beginning with a biblical discussion of God’s activity in the personhood of humanity, the training deals with implications of the holistic gospel for a missional congregation and the way in which the gospel spreads through social networks.
